I actually waited a few years after HS to go back to school, but I don't think that it's a necessity to have gone to college in order to facilitate a worthwhile learning experience. I think learning itself is the most important thing and not where that learning takes place.

Nice meeting you too and thanks for stopping by! :DAnihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10708453250023278530noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115234229390911001.post-17445493326855549682011-04-26T09:56:44.339-07:002011-04-26T09:56:44.339-07:00I've become a better student of life. Conferences definitely help in that you get to meet and/or hear industry professionals give their take on the subject.

@Nutschell Eek! 200,000 words?! *wide eyed shock* Did you eventually end up trimming that or are you still revising? Oh and I think I actually met you in person at SCBWI's first Hollywood schmooze! I still think a post entitled Shut The ___ Up would have covered STU just fine. ;)

You are so right about studying the craft and the business. Two parts that are vital to understand if you plan to publish a novel.

I feel the same way about my first and second books' quality. My first is being critiqued by a pub pro right now and I am cringing already before it has been returned to me. I always planned to rewrite it when it came back, but comparing what I had done to what my WIP is now doing as far as my skills... I am embarrassed by the earlier work a bit.

Write and learn. It took me forever to open up to another person and share what I had written, but it was one of the best things I've ever done. And I'm right there with you--since I've started paying more attention to learning the craft, my writing has really improved.

I think the thing that has improved my confidence the most has been meeting other writers. I used to think that writers were a highly competitive bunch who were all out to get each other. But over the last year or so, I've learned that everyone is really supportive and helpful, and that we're all cheering each other on.Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16496310224885631202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-115234229390911001.post-91211109612136893242011-04-25T10:46:27.494-07:002011-04-25T10:46:27.494-07:00HA!
